Principal / Lead Hydraulic Flood Modeller

About the job

Due to our success in gaining a breadth of design work in the environmental and engineering sector we currently have a vacancy for an experienced hydraulic engineer who wishes to work on a variety of challenging environmental consultancy projects in the fields of hydrology and flood risk management.  We currently have ongoing commissions with the OPW for 5 flood relief schemes which all involve complex hydraulic modelling and optioneering as well as numerous smaller scale projects for the private and public sectors in Ireland and Eastern Europe.

The post of Principal / Lead Hydraulic Modeller is a key role leading and supervising our hydraulic modellers and developing our capacity.

  • You will have significant experience in hydraulic modelling and mentoring junior modellers,
  • You may either be in a senior position or looking to take the next step into management of a wider team of modellers. 
  • You will act as a key technical lead responsible for reviewing hydraulic modelling output and developing the skills of the existing team.
  • You will also be project focussed, involved in the technical execution of hydraulic modelling studies and able to take a lead project management role.  

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will, amongst other things, be responsible for:

  • Leadership and strategic management of JBA's hydraulic modellers.
  • Providing specialist technical knowledge to projects and advising other staff on hydraulic modelling issues.
  • Checking hydraulic modelling projects are fit for delivery.
  • Preparing quotations and tenders, including budget, resourcing and programme.  This will include multi-disciplinary projects drawing from a wide range of resources within JBA and sub-consultants.
  • Communication with clients, including attendance at meetings, site visits and other forms of written and verbal communication.
  • The overall budget and programme of projects to which you are assigned the role of project manager.
  • Contributing to the development of new best-practice principles and concepts, developing innovative solutions for clients. 

Qualifications and Relevant Experience

A degree in a numerate science discipline is essential (maths, physics, geography or other science subjects will be considered). The applicant would ideally hold ordinary membership of Engineers Ireland / CIWEM or similar professional body, and should be focused on a pathway towards chartership. JBA has a structured training programme to ensure that staff are appropriately skilled and are on target to meet their own personal development goals.

The successful applicant will have considerable experience of developing hydraulic models and providing mentoring and peer review of the work of their team, preferably from a consultancy background. Knowledge of the water infrastructure environment, strategic flood risk assessment, flood risk assessment, hydrology, hydraulic modelling, option development and cost benefit analysis would be beneficial.  

In addition, we are looking for a candidate with the following knowledge and experience:

  • A high level of competency in at least one hydraulic modelling software suite which must include FloodModeller / Estry and TuFlow (HEC-RAS 1d and 2d would be a benefit but not essential).
  • Ideally Chartered but as a minimum must meet ICE/IEI/CIWEM (or equivalent) competencies.
  • Able to manage others and supervise technical staff.
  • Able to approach all your tasks in a diligent, professional and organised manner;
  • Project management experience relating to larger, more complex projects involving, for example, multiple teams, sub-contractors and sub-consultants.
  • Able to effectively communicate technical and business issues to other JBA staff and third parties.
  • Ability to assist with the preparation of tenders including formulation of technical methodology and financial content
  • Proven ability to deliver a project through its full life cycle.
  • Able to lead project meetings and progress meetings / presentations with clients.

 Language and other skills

  • The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, be able to fluently speak and read in English, other languages are also helpful.
  • Ability to use GIS software or able to provide clear instruction to others on analytical tasks.
