Experienced Ecologist

The Position - permanent full-time

JBA is an independent employee-owned company with an enviable reputation for delivering high quality and outcome-focused environmental and engineering services. We are currently seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Ecologist with at least five years post graduate consultancy experience to join our growing environmental management team. The post holder will support the expansion of our ecological and environmental services in across Ireland, supporting projects across a wide range of sectors and will be based in Limerick.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will, amongst other things, be responsible for:

  • Providing expert ecological input into a range of projects;
  • Planning and undertaking site surveys and other fieldwork, for a range of protected species, a wide variety of habitat types and utilising a number of survey techniques;
  • Undertaking reports for Habitats Directive Appropriate Assessments: i.e. the preparation of Screening for Appropriate Assessment reports and Natura Impact Statements;
  • Undertaking Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIAs) and inputting to the biodiversity chapter of Environmental Impact Assessment Reports (EIARs) 
  • Working with colleagues throughout JBA, and liaising with clients, regulators and stakeholders.
  • Writing and reviewing technical reports and other outputs;
  • Project Management;
  • Liaising with clients, regulators and stakeholders.

Qualifications and Experience

Candidates will need a degree in an ecological discipline and a track record in ecological surveying and assessment, preferably gained from within an environmental consultancy. Ideally with chartered membership of CIEEM (and at least eligibility for full membership). A full Irish driving licence is also essential. 

In addition, we are looking for a candidate with the following knowledge and experience:

  • Detailed knowledge of wildlife and conservation legislation, within Ireland, including the Habitats Directive Regulations (2011) and Wildlife Acts;
  • Experience in Phase 1 Habitat surveys, Fossitt habitat classification, NVC and botanical survey techniques;
  • Excellent technical report writing skills;
  • Experience in drafting Appropriate Assessment Screening Reports and Natura Impact Statements
  • Knowledge and awareness of the planning process and policy;
  • Experience of designing, implementing and managing ecological mitigation on a range of projects;
  • Experience of working in multi-disciplinary teams to deliver the objectives of large and complex commissions.

Given the nature of the role and the work carried out by JBA Consulting, it would be advantageous if candidates have qualifications and experience in some of the following areas:

  • A postgraduate degree in ecology or related subject;
  • Demonstrable project management experience throughout the entire project life cycle;
  • Business development experience;
  • Specialist experience in one or more of the following areas: aquatic or coastal ecology, botany, terrestrial mammals (including bats) or ornithology;
  • An understanding of the Water Framework Directive (WFD);
  • Experience of wider environmental and sustainability issues;
  • Knowledge and understanding of ecosystem services;
  • Renewable energy project experience; 
  • Familiarity with river restoration techniques; and
  • GIS and/or CAD experience.
