Principal Civil Engineer

Due to our success in gaining a breadth of design work in the environmental and engineering sector we currently have a vacancy for a civil/structural engineer at Senior Engineer level who wishes to work on a variety of challenging structural designs, flood risk management schemes, and drainage and environmental projects in either our Dublin or Limerick office. 

The Position

In the role of Principal Engineer, you will lead JBA’s civil engineering portfolio, providing technical leadership and project management of these commissions.  This portfolio involves public and private sector commissions, including a suite of 5 OPW commissioned flood relief schemes and developer led projects, providing civil design of infrastructure and storm water systems.  You will also lead on a wide range of water related construction projects, such as canal restoration, strategic investigations and outline design of flood risk and drainage mitigation measures for local authorities and Irish Rail.  

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will, amongst other things, be responsible for:

  • Contribute new skills and experiences to JBA, and challenge established ideas
  • Prepare quotations and tenders, including budget, resourcing and programme.  This will include multi-disciplinary projects drawing from a wide range of resources within JBA and sub-consultants.
  • Build JBA’s developer led portfolio of water and environmental projects
  • Manage the delivery of complex flood risk and water management projects
  • Take responsibility for the overall budget and programme of projects to which you are assigned the role of project manager.
  • Provide specialist technical knowledge to projects and advising other staff on technical matters.
  • Check technical work undertaken by project teams is to applicable standards and procedures.
  • Act in the role of Project Supervisor Design Process where appropriate and prepare and review Designer's Risk Assessments

Qualifications and Experience:

A degree in civil and or structural engineering is essential. The applicant would be expected to be a Chartered member of Engineers Ireland, ICE or equivilent and have demonstrable experience leading a team of engineers

Previous professional experience is essential, preferably from a consultancy background including knowledge of pile design, structural concrete or geotechnical design and experience acting as PSDP. You should also have an appreciation of environmental legislation.  A track record of management of construction works under the Public Procurement Contracts is required.

In addition, we are looking for a candidate with the following knowledge and experience:

  • Able to work independently, planning undertaking and checking work without supervision
  • Able to manage others and supervise technical staff.
  • Able to approach all your tasks in a diligent, professional and organised manner;
  • Project management capability relating to larger, more complex projects involving, for example, multiple teams, sub-contractors and sub-consultants.
  • Able to effectively communicate technical and business issues to other JBA staff and third parties.
  • Ability to lead in the preparation of tenders including formulation of technical methodology and financial content
  • Proven ability to deliver multiple projects through their full life cycles.
  • Able to lead project meetings and progress meetings / presentations with clients.
  • Have the ability for innovative thinking and a strong analytical and problem solving background.
