Flood Studies Update

Cost:
€320.00
Duration:
1 day

The Flood Studies Update provides a new set of procedures for flood estimation in Ireland. After nine years of research the FSU methods and online portal were launched in 2014. This course provides an introduction to the FSU methods and gives delegates hands-on experience of the new software. JBA carried out two work packages of the FSU research and was among the first to apply the new methods, including on a large scale in the Western CFRAM study. The course will be led by experienced tutors who can provide a unique blend of inside knowledge of the FSU research and extensive practical experience of implementing the full range of FSU methods on a wide variety of catchments.

Course contents

  • Overview of hydrology of Ireland
  • Flow and rainfall measurement
  • Statistical analysis of flood peak data
  • Ungauged catchment flood peak estimation
  • Rainfall-runoff analysis and hydrograph creation
  • Choice of method
  • Guidance on river modelling
  • Unusual catchments

Learning outcomes

After the course delegates should:

  • Understand the key principles of the FSU approach to flood estimation.
  • Understand the steps involved in estimating design peak flows and hydrographs.
  • Know how to use the FSU web portal along with other software where appropriate.
  • Know what to consider when selecting a method
  • Understand the continuing role of older methods such as FSR rainfall-runoff
  • Be aware of the options for dealing with unusual catchments

Who should attend?

Engineers and modellers who undertake flood estimation in Ireland.  No previous experience of flood estimation is necessary, although some knowledge of hydrology will be helpful.
