Enhancing community spaces with sustainable design

We provided multi-disciplinary consultancy services for this project, covering the planning and detailed design stages. Our role included conducting a Flood Risk Assessment (FRA) and ecological screening to support the planning phase. In addition, we delivered detailed designs for drainage and Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS), footpath build-up and alignment, and structural elements. Using Civil 3D, we designed new accessible pedestrian thoroughfares as well as callisthenics areas, and a Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA).

Designing the surface water drainage systems presented challenges, including navigating constraints such as land-take requirements, design levels, and existing underground services. These were addressed through close collaboration with the project architects and the client to develop effective solutions. Although the project was mainly delivered by our team in Ireland, a collaboration between the UK's structures team and external partners ensured a coordinated and efficient approach.

The drainage design for three new sports pitches relied on four large attenuation storage areas; a swale, an attenuation pond and two overflow attenuation ponds for larger rainfall events.

Creating climate resilient drainage and community spaces

The design of the drainage systems incorporates allowances for climate change, ensuring resilience against future environmental challenges. Additionally, the project focuses on improving the quality of surface water runoff before it reaches the receiving watercourse. Alongside these environmental enhancements, the project includes the creation of an upgraded public park, offering significant benefits to the local community.
