Future-proofing Ireland’s weather alert system
Met Éireann, the Irish National Meteorological Service, is the leading provider of weather information and related services for Ireland. In 2024, we were awarded a new three-year contract to update and future-proof the system - a testament to our continued innovation and trusted delivery. Behind the scenes, our UK TDSD team of over 70 specialists are modernising the service to meet the evolving needs of both the public and key organisations. Built on Amazon Web Services (AWS) Technology, the system integrates with Met Éireann’s website and app and allows Met Éireann to seamlessly issue Weather Warnings and deliver automated, real-time alerts for weather, marine, environmental, and aviation risks from a single system.

Empowering organisations with secure, self-managed alert delivery
The system not only informs the public but also enables targeted alerts to specific stakeholders, such as:
- County and city councils
- Fire and rescue services
- Airports and aviation stakeholders
A dedicated, secure portal allows organisations to manage their own subscriptions and recipients, ensuring critical weather warnings reach the right people at the right time.
The upcoming system updates going live in three releases planned over Summer, Autumn and Winter 2025, will introduce:
- A new warning editor for Met Éireann forecasters
- Sub-country level alerts providing more localised, accurate warnings
- Polygon-based warnings allowing for even more precise targeting
For the first time, we will be delivering 24/7, 365 days a year support for the system. A significant milestone that demonstrates the trust placed in us and our growing capabilities in mission-critical resilience technology.
Adapting innovation: real-time resilience for a global audience
As product owners we’re also exploring opportunities to adapt this platform for other resilience-focused organisations globally - combining the power of real-time alerting with our expertise in hazard modelling and risk communication.
