Senior Ecologist

JBA is an independent employee-owned company with an enviable reputation for delivering high quality and outcome-focused environmental and engineering services. We are currently seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Senior Ecologist to join our growing environmental management team in Ireland.  We have recently won major EIA’s for a number of water related projects such as Clonakilty Flood Relief Scheme, and are also undertaking an assessment of OPW’s Arterial Drainage Maintenance Programme. The post holder will support the expansion of our ecological and environmental services, supporting projects across a wide range of sectors. 


Responsibilities


The successful candidate will, amongst other things, be responsible for:



  • Providing expert ecological input into a range of projects;

  • Organising, planning and undertaking site surveys and other fieldwork, for a range of protected species, a wide variety of habitat types and utilising a number of ecological survey techniques;

  • Undertaking Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEA), ecological impact assessments (EcIAs) and ecological chapters for Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and Strategic Environmental Assessments (SEAs) for commercial development, flood relief schemes and development plans;

  • Undertaking Natura Impact Assessments (NIS) and Appropriate Assessments;

  • Writing and reviewing technical reports and other outputs;

  • Producing project proposals and quotations;

  • Management of budgets and deadlines for projects;

  • Managing and mentoring junior staff, working with colleagues throughout JBA, and liaising with clients, regulators and stakeholders.

Qualifications and Experience


Candidates will need a degree in an ecological discipline and a track record in ecological survey and assessment, preferably gained from within an environmental consultancy.  Full membership of the CIEEM (or eligibility for full membership) and a full driving licence are also essential.


In addition, we are looking for a candidate with the following knowledge and experience:



  • Detailed knowledge of wildlife and conservation legislation, within Ireland and also the UK, including the Habitats Regulations;

  • Hold at least one protected species survey licence;

  • Experience in Phase 1 Habitat surveys and botanical survey techniques;

  • Excellent technical report writing skills;

  • Knowledge and awareness of planning process and policy;

  • Experience of designing, implementing and managing ecological mitigation schemes;

  • Experience of working in multi-disciplinary teams to deliver the objectives of large and complex commissions; and

Given the nature of the role and work of JBA Consulting it would be of advantage if candidates have qualifications and experience in some of the following areas:



  • A postgraduate degree in ecology or related subject;

  • Project management and business development experience;

  • Specialist experience in aquatic and coastal ecology or ornithology;

  • Practical understanding of the Water Framework Directive (WFD);

  • Experience of wider environmental and sustainability issues;

  • Knowledge and understanding of ecosystem services;

  • Renewable energy project experience;

  • Fish passage schemes

  • River restoration techniques; and

  • GIS and/or CAD experience.
